The originally planned launch of the new Onvis HomeKit Motion Detector with Thread, scheduled for March, has been delayed by approximately eight months. However, the device is now available for pre-order, with delivery set for December 20, just in time for the Christmas festivities.
The Onvis Motion Detector SMS2 stands out for integrating a motion sensor, as well as brightness, temperature, and humidity sensors. The device is powered by two AAA batteries.
Thread, but no Matter
So far so good. Up to this point, the new model does not differ from its predecessor. However, the difference lies in the wireless connection. While the predecessor exclusively relied on Bluetooth, the Onvis SMS2 also supports Thread.
The network protocol, specifically developed for the Internet of Things (IoT), can be self-organizing, allowing devices to communicate with each other and relay information within the network (Mesh). This significantly contributes to improving the range and reliability of the network.
There is no mention of Matter, though. Instead, the new model natively supports Apple Home. For details on the functionalities available in HomeKit, as always, refer to HomeDevices.
The Onvis SMS2 is available for pre-order on Amazon Germany for €31.99. The predecessor is no longer available.
